Pain Took Me to Morpeth. Brook Sent It Home.

Brook comes from Old English brōc, meaning a small stream.

Morpeth is generally understood to derive from Old English elements related to a “moor” (mor) and a “path” (pæð), often interpreted as “path across the moor.”

Two people standing together indoors in Morpeth, smiling at the camera. There are paintings on the wall and a plant on a shelf to the left, whilst sunlight streams softly like a brook, easing any pain with their warmth.

You may be wondering that on Earth a stream and a moor path have in connection. Trust me, it happened the same to me at first. But after you read the whole post, you will see it too.

It’s all about alignment.

Some years ago, when I was visiting Spain, life decided to surprise me. Not with sunshine, flamenco or serrano ham, but with something not enjoyable at all: sciatica. One moment I was enjoying a conversation and the next I was crying because of a terrible pain. It felt as if someone had plugged my leg into an electrical socket.

I flew back to UK and visited the GP who kindly prescribed me what I was already taking, everyday painkillers everyone knows so do not need to mention their names. He also made an appointment for the physio who he believed would help with my pain.

Being a model patient, attended the physio. He recommended some different exercises I used to do when I practised athletics during my teenage years. I knew how to do them, I knew what they were good for but the sciatica was still part of me. One day, when I questioned him because I didn’t feel the treatment was working at all he left me speechless with his answer: “I’m afraid you’ll have to learn how to live with the pain.”

Learn to live with it? Not the exact answer I was waiting for!

I’m sure my face betrayed me due to the fact he immediately offered me to send me to the musculoskeletal doctor who -he thought- could possibly help me. Great, I thought.

That was the next doctor to see me, who said exactly the same as the previous one. At that time I felt really depressed, could not accept to get used to live with a pain at 58! Some may say I wasn’t particularly young but when you’re 58 you feel you still have so many dances pending! I could not accept it. This doctor offered an appointment with a surgeon.

I will let you guess what he said…. Yes, you are right, I would have to learn how to live with the pain, surgery was no option. Pain was.

It was then when a good friend mentioned Brook from Morpeth and took me there. I learnt he was a young Australian, married to a beautiful South African. They have lovely children who are a nice mixture of both of them. When I heard this, I thought the ways we get to meet some people on this Earth. He’s from Australia, I was born in Uruguay and we get to know each other in UK. Interesting, isn’t it?

I cannot tell you how many times I entered the clinic crying and needing help to walk. Nevertheless, I trusted him, he made me a promise I will never forget: “You will be fine and will not need any painkillers.” I cried again, but the tears were of hope. I could not believe it! With time, I had to, because it was true!

My treatment took many visits to Morpeth. Many adjustments. Many moments of patience. But everything was worthwhile. Brook is an excellent chiropractor; he doesn’t have a magic wand or secret potion hidden in a cupboard. He has a lovely heart who makes him love his profession and help others live better lives. Mine has definitely changed, I am 64 this year and no need of painkillers at all.

A woman in a black shirt smiles whilst holding hands with a human skeleton model in a room with a painting on the wall, possibly exploring pain and anatomy in Morpeth.

And that brings me back to names.

His name, Brook, means a small stream. I love water and I love the way streams flow through the landscape, washing away what no longer belongs there. He’s not a small stream, he’s a great river helping others get rid of the pains in their suffering bodies.

He works in Morpeth, the path across the moor. I went through that path, wondering if there was a way out for my suffering. They were both the path for new adventures, a life full of joy, without painkillers, and most important, without the sciatica pain. I like to think I left it in Morpeth and Brook swept it away with the current.

On a wall in his clinic there’s a poster which says: “Life is better when aligned.” .” I love this quote. Not only regarding the spine, but I think it applies to everything. When there is order, there is alignment and everything works out better when this happens. When our bodies are aligned, they function better. When our thoughts are aligned, we make better decisions. When our priorities are aligned, life feels lighter. When there is alignment, there is harmony.

A visit to a chiropractor is always advisable. A regular adjustment goes hand-in-hand with good health and sometimes, we don’t realise about it.

Adjustments are necessary not only for our bodies, but in everyone’s life. They help us lead a  more aligned life who lets us reach our full potential and our happiness on Earth.

To sum up: I believe alignment is about living well.

I leave you this time with one final question: When was the last time you checked your alignment?
