Which is your superpower?

A superhero in a red suit with a lightning bolt emblem crouches dramatically, surrounded by electric sparks, against a cityscape backdrop.

Some superheroes fly; others show up with snacks, good advice, and the magic ability to make everything feel possible.

No one is as fast as Flash Gordon! He was my favourite superhero from childhood. He helps humanity, his superpower is speed, and his suit is red, my favourite colour. But I’ve just realised we all have superpowers! You, me, all of us have them! We only need to learn how and when to use them so we can change the world.

Yes, we can, believe me! I’ve been using some of mine during this last week just to confirm we can make a difference. You may ask yourself, how I did it…well, I started by leaving a little note on my daughter’s pillow when she left the house so that she could find it when she went to sleep. I cooked my husband’s favourite dish in his honour. I told the cashier at the supermarket she had beautiful eyes. I smiled to the people I crossed when I went for a walk. I helped someone who was in a wheelchair. I told another sister I had been praying for her as I knew she was struggling with her husband’s illness. I called a friend just to tell her I love her and was missing her voice. Don’t you also have those superpowers to change the world? I’m sure you do! We tend to think we need to do great things to see a change happen. We forget that great things start by little tiny ones. We can make such an impact!

A person in a Batman costume strikes a heroic pose with a child clutching a Batman figure in the hospital room, brightening the day with superhero smiles and shared courage.

Not long ago, I watched a video about a young boy in hospital. His doctor was visiting him in his morning routine and told him he had seen there was a visitor for him, this created expectation in the boy. The doctor told him he would look for him and left the room. Helped by a nurse, the boy left the bed and waited at the door for his visitor. All of a sudden, he saw a tall figure with a wide cape, he was coming towards him and believe it or not, it was Batman!!! The boy’s face totally changed and there was a wide smile and for an instant his pains disappeared. Batman had come just to see him at the hospital. He spent with him a few minutes and after the superhero left, the doctor came again to his room, “worried” he had not seen the visitor. Indeed, this doctor had superpowers, he changed his patient’s face for some minutes, he brought happiness to the boy. I’m sure this was not a great effort for him. He changed someone’s world for a few minutes. This doctor was a real super-hero. I loved the video!!

The change must start in us. Self-discipline, self-learning, or self-control, all three very important in order to achieve what we are trying to do and to enjoy the blessings we need, self-mastery. As Eldon Tanner put it: “There are two important elements in self-mastery. The first is to determine your course or set the sails, so to speak, of moral standards; the other is the willpower, or the wind in the sails carrying one forward.”  Once we have determined our goal in life, we can do whatever we need to reach it and set a pace for our way. Needless to mention obstacles will be on the way, but our strength and will must be powerful in order to reach the desired goal. We are the captain in our lives, we can choose the way!

Illustration of a superhero using their superpower to soar through the sky, clad in a blue costume and red boots, with a vibrant red cape flowing behind and one arm extended forward.

You’re invited! Put on your cape and show the world the great superhero you are!

“A hero can be anyone, even a man doing as simple and reassuring as putting a coat around a little boy’s shoulder to let him know the world hadn’t ended.” Batman, the Dark Knight rises.

I couldn’t resist when I saw them in London!

A person stands between two cosplayers dressed as comic characters, each exuding a sense of superpower, on a paved area near a street.

  • So true Monica! A smile or a friendly word can change someone’s whole day!
I love this! If people can do nothing else in this world, they can be someone’s Superhero by just giving a little of themselves! Kindness goes a long way. 😁 X
